The Romance of Rail
The Blue Train
For a unique, carefree holiday, board the train, forget the maps and travel 1 500km through scenic South Africa.
The Blue Train is fully air-conditioned and luxuriously carpeted, with individually controlled music and radio channels as well as hot, cold and iced water on tap in all compartments and coupes.
Passengers can either enjoy the journey in the seclusion of their private compartments and coupes, or relax in the comfortable atmosphere of the lounge car which also has an intimate, well-stocked bar.
Meals are freshly and expertly prepared on board by gourmet chefs and served in the beautifully appointed dining car with its exquisite table settings.
In true Blue Train tradition, passengers dress elegantly for dinner.
Until recently, the Blue Train's route was exclusively between Pretoria/Johannesburg and Cape Town (1 500km).
Now, two new routes have been opened - the Lowveld experience between Pretoria and Nelspruit and the Zimbabwe Spectacular, between Pretoria and Victoria Falls (2 nights each way).
All three routes promise passengers a journey of unforgettable pleasure.
Steam Trains: Outeniqua Choo-chooThe handsome, squeaky-clean Class 24 locomotive with its timber-fitted, leather-scented old carriages runs daily between George and Knysna (except Sundays and certain public holidays).
With provision for up to 300 passengers, the Choo-Choo starts its journey from George and puffs its way through woodlands and fern forest to meet the sea at Victoria Bay, a magical little cove. It then passes through a series of tunnels, and negotiates the long, scenically stunning sweep of the Kaaimans River Bridge to enter Wilderness, and emerges to follow the chain of lakes and the steep incline of the Goukamma Valley,
before descending to Knysna. Here it skirts the western shore of the lagoon before finally crossing a long, low-level bridge.
Departs George Station at 08h45, arrives Knysna 2 1/2 hours later.
Return journey starts at 13h45 and ends 16h15. Refreshments available on board and souvenirs are sold at both stations.
Wine Route
The Stellenbosch wine route is the oldest, the largest and probably the most visited of the Southwest Cape's wine routes.
Many of the estates are very old, their gabled, whitewashed Cape-Dutch homesteads, rolling vineyards and their shade-dappled grounds lovely beyond measure.
All of the 27 venues are within a 12km radius of the town.
Visitors are encouraged to sample the wines; there's no limit to the number you're permitted to try, though you're usually charged a small fee per glass.
Tours offered include the bottling and labelling processes, viewing the casks tiered in the coolness of a wine-and wood-scented cellar and talks to people who know all the secrets and subtleties of wine craft.
Other routes are at Paarl and Franschhoek (16 different wine estates)
Rovos Rail.
